Sex and Diabetes
While sex seems to be everywhere, television, billboards, newspapers, and other forms of advertising, Americans are still reluctant to talk to their doctor about their sex problems and issues. However many people, whether or not they have diabetes, have sexual problems. The Journal of American Medical Association reported in February of 1999 (10 years ago) about a survey they conducted of 1,749 men and 1,410 women age 18 to 59. The survey found that 43% of women and 31% of men were found to suffer from sexual dysfunction.

Lubrication – Women with diabetes may be prone to problems with vaginal lubrication. You can also have trouble with sexual response due to nerve damage caused by the diabetes. There are medications available that can aid you in your sexual response. However the best thing to do is talk to your doctor about these problems.

Impotence – Impotence is the inability to maintain an erection long enough to become satisfied during sex. Many men suffer from impotence during their life time. Men in their 50’s and 60’s are more likely to suffer from impotence. For men with diabetes these problems can occur 10 to 15 years earlier than with men who don’t suffer from diabetes. It is estimated that diabetes related impotence accounts for 40% of all impotence cases.

Sometimes nerves disease which is related to diabetes is the cause of impotence. When the nerves are damage, the flow of blood to the penis can be interrupted or cut short and you wont get a good erection or none at all. This is due to the damage that the diabetes has caused to your nerves. Your doctor can help you determine the best course of action.

After Sex – If you use insulin, be very aware that sex can cause low blood sugar levels. You should test your blood before and after having sex. That way you can compare the readings.
